CPM calculator: work out CPM, ad cost or impressions

To calculate CPM, divide ad spend by impressions and multiply by 1,000: 150 spent on 30,000 impressions is a CPM of 5.00. The calculator also works backwards. Enter a CPM and an impression target to get the cost, or a budget and a CPM to estimate how many impressions it buys. CPM is the price of 1,000 recorded impressions, not of reaching 1,000 different people.

CPM = spend ÷ impressions × 1,000

CPM is the cost of 1,000 recorded impressions, not 1,000 different people. Estimates of impressions from a budget depend on the auction, targeting and placements.

CPM formula

CPM = spend ÷ impressions × 1,000Spend = CPM × impressions ÷ 1,000Impressions = spend ÷ CPM × 1,000

How to use the CPM calculator

  1. Choose what to solve for: CPM, total cost or impressions.
  2. Enter the other two numbers from the same report scope: one account currency, one complete period and the same campaign, ad set or ad. Convert Google Ads API values in micros (divide by 1,000,000) first.
  3. Press Calculate. The working is shown under the result so you can check it against your report. Compare CPMs only within one platform, placement and format.

Cost per thousand impressions: a worked example

Illustrative example: a campaign spends 150 and records 30,000 impressions. 150 ÷ 30,000 = 0.005 per impression, × 1,000 = a CPM of 5.00 in the account currency. The number of distinct people reached is a separate measurement.

The same formula answers three planning questions. All numbers are illustrative, not benchmarks.

Where to find spend and impressions in Google Ads and Meta

Google Ads: in the campaigns table, open Columns and add Cost, Impr. and Avg. CPM. In the Google Ads API, cost_micros and metrics.average_cpm are in micros, so 5,000,000 means 5.00.

Meta Ads Manager: open Columns, choose Customise columns and add Amount spent, Impressions and CPM (cost per 1,000 impressions). Meta also shows cost per 1,000 Accounts Center accounts reached, which divides by reach, not impressions, and is always higher than CPM when frequency is above 1.

How CPM connects to CPC and reach

CPM, click-through rate and cost per click are linked: CPC = CPM ÷ (CTR × 1,000), with CTR as a fraction. At a CPM of 5.00 and a 1% CTR, each click costs 0.50. A falling CPM with a falling CTR can leave CPC unchanged or higher.

Cost per 1,000 people reached is spend ÷ reach × 1,000. With 30,000 impressions and 12,000 reach (frequency 2.5), CPM is 5.00 but the cost per 1,000 reached is 12.50.

When the CPM ratio is undefined

When impressions are zero, CPM is undefined, so the calculator reports it as unavailable rather than zero. Placement and format differences can make a direct cost comparison misleading, and the calculator has no information about attention, audience quality or sales.

Questions, answered

How do you calculate CPM?

Divide ad spend by impressions and multiply by 1,000. 150 ÷ 30,000 × 1,000 = a CPM of 5.00 in the account currency.

How do I calculate cost from CPM?

Multiply the CPM by the number of impressions and divide by 1,000. 200,000 impressions at a CPM of 8 cost 1,600.

How many impressions will my budget buy?

Divide the budget by the CPM and multiply by 1,000. A 500 budget at a CPM of 8 buys about 62,500 impressions. It is an estimate: the actual CPM depends on the auction, audience and placements.

What does CPM stand for?

Cost per mille, the cost of 1,000 ad impressions. Mille is Latin for thousand.

Is CPM the cost of reaching 1,000 people?

No. Impressions count showings, and one person can see an ad several times. Cost per 1,000 people reached divides spend by reach instead.

What is a good CPM?

There is no universal figure. CPM varies by platform, country, audience, format and season. Compare a campaign with its own history and with campaigns buying the same placements.
