Metric note

Cost per click (CPC): formula, examples and calculator

Cost per click (CPC) is advertising spend divided by the number of clicks recorded in the same period, currency and report. If a campaign spends 600 and records 300 clicks, its average CPC is 2.00 in the account currency. CPC is the price of one recorded interaction. It does not say whether the visitor was suitable, whether the landing page worked or whether the campaign produced a useful business outcome.

CPC formula with a worked example

Divide spend by clicks, with both from the same report scope: one ad account, one currency, one complete date range and one click definition. CPC is also linked to CPM and click-through rate: at the same CPM, a higher CTR means a lower CPC.

Worked example (illustrative numbers): 600 spend ÷ 300 clicks = an average CPC of 2.00. At a CPM of 5.00 and a CTR of 1% (0.01), CPC = 5.00 ÷ (0.01 × 1,000) = 0.50. A 1,000 budget at a CPC of 2.00 buys about 500 clicks.

CPC = spend ÷ clicks

The average cost of a recorded click, using one click definition. Estimates of clicks from a budget assume the CPC holds, which depends on the auction.

Illustrative CPC calculation for two campaigns

Campaign A spends 600 and records 300 clicks, so its average CPC is 2.00. Campaign B spends 600 and records 600 clicks, so its average CPC is 1.00. On click cost alone, B looks twice as efficient.

Add the outcome column and the picture changes. If A produced 15 completed enquiries and B produced 5, A cost 40 per enquiry and B cost 120. The cheaper click bought less useful traffic. None of these numbers are benchmarks; they show why the ratio needs company.

Average CPC vs max CPC vs actual CPC

The three figures are easy to confuse. Your maximum CPC bid is a ceiling you set (or a bid strategy sets for you). The actual CPC is what one auction charged, often less than the maximum. Average CPC is total cost divided by total clicks over a period, and is the number reports and this page’s formula use.

Actual CPCThe amount charged for one clickThe auction, at or below max CPC

Where to find CPC in Google Ads and Meta Ads Manager

Google Ads: in the campaigns table, open Columns and add Clicks, Cost and Avg. CPC. Calls and video engagements are counted as interactions, not clicks, so use Avg. cost per interaction for those. In the Google Ads API the field is metrics.average_cpc, returned in micros, so divide by 1,000,000. Check unit scaling before dividing: a cost of 2,000,000 micros is 2.00, not two million.

Meta Ads Manager: add Amount spent, Link clicks and CPC (cost per link click), or Clicks (all) and CPC (all). Link-click CPC is higher because it counts fewer clicks. In the Insights API the fields are cpc (all clicks) and cost_per_inline_link_click. Name the click type in your report heading.

When is cost per click undefined?

If no clicks are recorded, the denominator is zero and the ratio is undefined. This happens with a new campaign, a paused ad group that still incurred a late charge, or a report filtered to a segment with no clicks. Display it as unavailable or a dash, never as 0.00.

A zero CPC implies free clicks, which is the opposite of what happened when money was spent and nothing was clicked. Dashboards and AI summaries that silently substitute zero will then rank that row as the cheapest in the account.

What a cheaper click does and does not tell you

CPC tells you the price of an interaction in a particular auction. It does not tell you the intent behind the click, whether the page loaded, whether the form was completed or whether the enquiry was qualified. A low average CPC can come from broad queries, cheaper placements, a different device mix or a country with less competition.

Average CPC also moves with seasonality, other advertisers’ budgets, bid strategy changes and match scope. Before explaining a movement, confirm both periods are complete, in the same timezone and currency, and use the same click definition. Then segment by campaign, network and device, and for Search open the search terms report.

How to check cost per click in Adlane

Connect the Google Ads or Meta ad account for the business you are reviewing. Ask a bounded question such as “Show average CPC by campaign for September in the account currency, with clicks and completed enquiries beside it, and flag any row with zero clicks.” Review the evidence rows the AI returns and the fields they came from.

If the review suggests a change, such as adjusting a bid or excluding a search term, Adlane prepares a proposal that you approve or reject; nothing is applied from the conversation itself.

Questions, answered

What is cost per click?

Cost per click (CPC) is the average amount paid for one recorded ad click. It is ad spend divided by clicks for the same period and scope.

How do you calculate CPC?

Divide ad spend by clicks. 600 spend ÷ 300 clicks = an average CPC of 2.00 in the account currency.

What is the CPC formula using CPM and CTR?

CPC = CPM ÷ (CTR × 1,000), with CTR as a fraction. A CPM of 5.00 at a 1% CTR gives a CPC of 0.50.

What is the difference between max CPC and average CPC?

Max CPC is the highest bid you allow for a click. Average CPC is what you actually paid on average, which is usually lower.

Is a lower CPC always better?

No. Cheaper clicks can come from less relevant queries or placements. Compare cost per enquiry or per sale before preferring the lower CPC.

Why does my CPC show as unavailable?

With zero clicks the ratio is undefined. Showing 0.00 would wrongly suggest free clicks when money was spent and nothing was clicked.
