Google Ads ROAS reporting: get the conversion value right

Reported ROAS is attributed conversion value divided by ad spend. The calculation is simple; interpreting the value is the hard part. Confirm whether conversion values represent actual order revenue, estimated lead value or another configured amount before describing the result as revenue performance.

Reported ROAS divides attributed conversion value by ad spend

Sum the conversion value for the campaigns and period in scope, sum the cost for the same campaigns and period, and divide. The result is usually written as a multiple, such as 4×, or as a percentage. Both are the same number presented differently; choose one and keep it consistent across the report.

Keep the underlying amounts beside the ratio. A campaign with a single large order can show a high ROAS that disappears the following month, and a campaign with zero spend has an undefined ROAS rather than an infinite one. The sums make low-volume outliers visible.

Confirm what the conversion value represents before calling it revenue

Conversion value in Google Ads is whatever the conversion action was configured to send. For an e-commerce purchase it may be the order total, with or without tax and shipping. For a lead it is often a fixed amount someone assigned as an estimate. For an imported event it may be a pipeline value or a closed deal amount.

Read the value definition for each contributing action, and state it in the report. “4× reported ROAS on assigned lead values” and “4× reported ROAS on collected order revenue” are very different claims, and the reader should not have to guess which one they are looking at.

Keep numerator and denominator on the same scope, period and currency

Both sides of the ratio must cover the same campaigns, the same complete date range in the account timezone and the same currency. If conversion values arrive in a currency different from the account currency, Google converts them according to its documented rules; if you combine values from more than one account, you need an explicit conversion method and should state the rate and date you used.

Attribution also shapes the numerator. The value credited to a campaign depends on the attribution model and the conversion window, so a change in either setting changes ROAS without any change in sales. Record the attribution model beside the figure.

Illustrative example: 4,000 in value, 1,000 in spend, 4× reported ROAS

Illustrative example: an invented account reports 4,000 in conversion value and 1,000 in spend over a complete month, giving a reported ROAS of 4×. On inspection, the contributing action is an enquiry form with an assigned value of 200 per submission; the 4,000 represents twenty enquiries, not collected sales.

The report should say so explicitly. If the sales team closes one enquiry in ten at an average order of 1,500, the collected revenue is 3,000 against the same 1,000 spend, and that is before any cost of fulfilment. Neither number is wrong, but only one of them should be called revenue.

ROAS is not profit and does not establish incrementality

Return on ad spend compares attributed value with advertising cost only. Returns, refunds, cost of goods, fulfilment, payment fees and staff time sit outside the ad report and can change the commercial interpretation entirely. A 4× ROAS on a product with thin margins can still lose money.

Attributed value is also not an estimate of what would have been sold without the ads. Some credited customers would have bought anyway. Keep platform-attributed performance separate from any business profitability assessment, and never add attributed value from Google Ads to attributed value from another platform as though it were unique revenue.

Run ROAS reporting questions in Adlane

Connect the Google Ads account and ask a bounded question that names the period, the campaigns and what you want to learn, for example: “Show conversion value, cost and reported ROAS for each Shopping campaign over the last complete quarter, and tell me which conversion actions supplied the value.” Adlane reads the connected data and returns the evidence it used, so the definition and the sums are visible beside the ratio.

Use the result to choose the next investigation: a campaign review, or a value-quality check with the measurement owner. Any change to bidding targets or budgets is a proposal that you review and approve; the conversation does not apply it. New campaigns start paused.
