Reach vs impressions: what reach means in advertising

Reach in advertising is the number of distinct people (or accounts) who saw an ad at least once. Impressions are the number of times the ad was shown in total. If 1,000 people each see an ad three times, reach is 1,000 and impressions are 3,000, and the average frequency is 3,000 ÷ 1,000 = 3. Reach is deduplicated within one report scope, which is why reach from separate rows, days or platforms cannot simply be added.

Reach vs impressions: the difference with an example

Impressions answer “how many times was the ad shown?” and reach answers “how many different people saw it?”. Every impression belongs to someone who is counted once in reach, so impressions are always equal to or greater than reach, and the gap between them is frequency. Worked example (illustrative numbers): a campaign records 30,000 impressions and 12,000 reach. Frequency is 30,000 ÷ 12,000 = 2.5, so the average person reached saw the ad two and a half times.

The same definitions hold on Facebook and Instagram, where Meta counts reach as Accounts Center accounts and impressions as times the ad was on screen, and in Google Ads, where reach is reported as unique users for campaign types that support it.

Average frequency

Frequency = impressions ÷ reach

An average across everyone reached. Some people saw the ad once, others many times. Use the provider’s reach for the same scope; reach rows cannot be added.

Is reach or impressions more important?

Neither is better; they answer different questions. Reach matters when the goal is to put a message in front of as many different people as possible, for example a launch or a local awareness campaign. Impressions matter for delivery, pacing and cost metrics such as CPM and click-through rate. Read them together: rising impressions with flat reach means the same people are seeing the ad more often, which can lead to creative fatigue; rising reach with flat impressions means exposure is spreading thinner.

Where to find reach and impressions in Meta and Google Ads

Meta Ads Manager: open Columns and add Reach, Impressions and Frequency beside Amount spent. Reach is shown for the level and date range you select, so set the range first and read the total row rather than adding rows. In the Marketing API Insights endpoint the fields are reach, impressions and frequency.

Google Ads: add Impr. for impressions. For Display, Video and other campaign types that support reach, add Unique users and Avg. impr. freq. per user from the Reach metrics column set. Search campaigns report impressions but not reach.

How do providers define reach, and what unit is counted?

Meta reports reach as an estimated number of accounts that saw an ad at least once, calculated for the scope requested. Google Ads reports unique reach metrics with their own methodology and availability by campaign type. Both are estimates or modelled figures rather than exact head counts, and both are specific to the level and period of the report.

State the provider, the reporting level (account, campaign, ad set or ad) and the period every time reach appears. Where the provider supports it, request the aggregate scope you actually need instead of reconstructing it from parts.

Why reach from separate rows cannot be added

Illustrative example: two ads each reach 1,000 people, and 400 of those people saw both. Combined reach is 1,600, not 2,000. The two row totals contain no information about the overlap, so no arithmetic on them recovers the true figure. The same applies to daily rows: a person reached on Monday and Tuesday appears in both.

The table shows which combinations are valid. Numbers are invented to illustrate overlap.

How reach, impressions and frequency relate

Impressions count exposures; reach counts people; frequency is impressions divided by reach for the same scope. With 30,000 impressions and 12,000 reach, frequency is 2.5. If reach is zero, frequency is undefined and should be shown as unavailable rather than zero.

Read the three together but keep them in separate columns. A rising impression count with flat reach means the same people are being exposed more often; a rising reach with flat impressions means exposure is spreading thinner.

Why cross-platform reach cannot be deduplicated from reports

Google and Meta do not share an identity graph with you, so their reach figures describe overlapping but unlinkable populations. Adding them produces a number that can exceed the real audience by an unknown amount. Report them side by side with their sources and label any combined total as unavailable.

The same limitation applies to adding reach from different ad accounts, or ad platform reach to analytics users. Each system counts a different unit under different rules.

How to read reach when making a creative or audience decision

Use the provider’s whole-scope reach for the period you care about and keep the detailed rows beside it for comparison. Detailed rows show which ads or days contributed; they are not building blocks for a total.

Before concluding that an audience is exhausted or that a creative has saturated, inspect frequency, response and cost over several weeks. Reach alone cannot say whether the people reached were the right ones. Record the reach figure you used, its scope and the report date in the decision log so the comparison can be repeated next month.

How to review reach in Adlane

Connect the Meta or Google Ads account and ask a bounded question: “For the last complete month, show campaign-level reach, impressions and frequency for this campaign, and do not sum reach across ad sets.” Review the rows the AI returns and confirm which provider scope each reach figure came from.

If the evidence suggests an audience or creative change, Adlane prepares a proposal that you approve or reject. Reach cannot be recovered from parts by a calculator; the frequency calculator above only works with reach and impressions from the same scope.

Questions, answered

What is the difference between reach and impressions?

Reach is the number of distinct people who saw an ad at least once; impressions are the total number of times it was shown. One person who sees an ad three times adds 1 to reach and 3 to impressions.

What is reach in advertising?

Reach is the number of unique people, accounts or devices (depending on the platform) exposed to an ad at least once within a report scope and period.

Can impressions be lower than reach?

Not within the same scope. Every person reached saw at least one impression, so impressions are equal to or higher than reach.

How do you calculate frequency from reach and impressions?

Divide impressions by reach for the same scope. 30,000 impressions ÷ 12,000 reach = an average frequency of 2.5.

What is reach vs impressions on Instagram and Facebook?

Meta counts reach as the number of Accounts Center accounts that saw the ad at least once, and impressions as the number of times it was on screen, including repeat views.

Why can I not add reach across ad sets or days?

The same person can appear in several rows. Two ads that each reach 1,000 people with 400 in common have a combined reach of 1,600, not 2,000. Ask the platform for reach at the level you need.
